Universidade Estadual do Maranhão (UEMA)
For over 40 years, the Maranhão State University (Uema) has been the university for all the people of Maranhão. It is a free educational institution with a multi-campus structure that spans much of the state of Maranhão. Uema was created in 1981 from the Federation of Higher Education Schools of Maranhão (FESM), which grouped together four separate higher education schools: the School of Administration, the School of Engineering, the School of Agronomy and the Faculty of Caxias. In 1975, FESM incorporated the School of Veterinary Medicine of São Luis and in 1979, the Faculty of Education of Imperatriz. FESM was transformed into the State University of Maranhão by Law No. 4,400 of December 30, 1981, and its operation was authorized by Federal Decree No. 94,143 of March 25, 1987, as a special regime autarchy, a legal entity under public law, in the multi-campus modality. Since then, UEMA has advanced in its expansion into the interior of the state through teaching, research and extension to be present throughout the state. Over the years, it has democratized access to knowledge for millions of people from Maranhão.
