The Federal University of São João del-Rei (UFSJ) was installed on April 21, 1987 as the Higher Education Foundation of São João del-Rei (FUNREI). In 2002 it was transformed into a University. Currently, the Institution is administratively structured into six educational units and a cultural center. They are located in São João del-Rei or Campus Santo Antônio, or Campus Dom Bosco and or Campus Tancredo de Almeida Neves, next to the Cultural Center of UFSJ. Between 2007 and 2008, UFSJ created three educational units in other municipalities of Minas Gerais: the Alto Paraopeba Campus, located on the border between the municipalities of Congonhas and Ouro Branco; o Campus Sete Lagoas, in the city of the same name; e o Dona Lindu Center-West Campus, located in the municipality of Divinópolis.

The Universidade Federal de São João Del Rei (UFSJ), through the national contract between CAPES and IEEE has an unlimited open access agreement with IEEE that enables researchers to publish articles as open access without open access fees in all IEEE fully and hybrid open access journals. The agreement applies to all original research articles accepted for publication between 5 November 2024 – 30 October 2027. To benefit from this agreement, the corresponding author has to be affiliated with Universidade Federal de São João Del Rei (UFSJ). Please use the correct institution name and your institutional email address during submi​​ssion. It is recommended for authors to select the CC BY 4.0 license. The open access funding request will be approved by an OA administrator at CAPES. Overlength page charges or color fees are not covered by the agreement and will be charged to authors.
