The Federal Government established, under Law No. 5,152 of October 21, 1966 (amended by Decree Law No. 921 of October 10, 1969, and by Law No. 5,928 of October 29, 1973), the Fundação Universidade do Maranhão – FUM, with the purpose of progressively implementing the Universidade do Maranhão. With over five decades of existence, UFMA has contributed significantly to the development of the State of Maranhão, training professionals in different areas of knowledge at the undergraduate and graduate levels, undertaking research focused on the main problems of the State and the Region, developing extension activities covering actions of social organization, production and technological innovations, training of human resources and appreciation of culture.

The Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA), through the national contract between CAPES and IEEE has an unlimited open access agreement with IEEE that enables researchers to publish articles as open access without open access fees in all IEEE fully and hybrid open access journals. The agreement applies to all original research articles accepted for publication between 5 November 2024 – 30 October 2027. To benefit from this agreement, the corresponding author has to be affiliated with Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA). The open access funding request will be approved by an OA administrator at CAPES. Overlength page charges or color fees are not covered by the agreement and will be charged to authors.
