Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)
The history of UFRGS begins with the founding of the School of Pharmacy and Chemistry in 1895, followed by the School of Engineering. This was also the beginning of higher education in Rio Grande do Sul. Also in the 19th century, the School of Medicine of Porto Alegre and the School of Law were founded, which in 1900 marked the beginning of humanities courses in the state. However, it was not until November 28, 1934 that the University of Porto Alegre was created, initially comprising the School of Engineering, with the Institutes of Astronomy, Electrotechnics and Industrial Chemistry; the School of Medicine, with the Schools of Dentistry and Pharmacy; the School of Law, with its School of Commerce; the School of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine; the School of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters and the Institute of Fine Arts. The third major moment of transformation of this University was in 1947, when it was renamed the University of Rio Grande do Sul. The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, headquartered in Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, is a century-old institution, recognized nationally and internationally.
