The National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM) was established on 21 June 2006 as a continuation of the Malaysian Armed Forces Academy (ATMA), which had been offering academic and military training since 1995. UPNM officially began operations in the 2007/2008 academic session with the establishment of three core faculties and a Foundation Centre. The university offers programmes focused on defence-related science, technology, and management, with a practical approach to meet the needs of the Malaysian Armed Forces and the nation’s strategic sectors.

The Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia, through the contract between the Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia library and IEEE, has an open access agreement with IEEE. The agreement enables researchers to publish articles as open access with a 15% discount on eligible APCs for publishing in IEEE gold or IEEE hybrid open access journals.
