In September 1953, with a view to developing the region, Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira founded the Diamantina School of Dentistry. Designed by Niemeyer, who at the time was still a promising architect, the school ended up becoming the seed from which the Federal University of the Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys, the UFVJM, would germinate. On December 17, 1960, it was transformed into the Federal School of Dentistry (Fafeod) and, on October 4, 2002, guided by the pursuit of excellence in teaching and support for the regional community, it became the Integrated Federal Schools of Diamantina (Fafeid). In addition to Dentistry, it began to offer courses in Nursing, Pharmacy, Nutrition and Physiotherapy, in the area of Health Sciences, and Agronomy, Forestry Engineering and Animal Science, in the area of Agricultural Sciences. On September 8, 2005, Law No. 11,173 was published in the Official Gazette of the Union, which transformed the Integrated Federal Colleges of Diamantina into the Federal University of the Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys – UFVJM
