IEEE and Open Access
The theme of Open Access Week this year centers around the importance of community. In keeping with this theme, IEEE now has many open access opportunities now available to authors, institutions, and the global technical and academic community, with more options added each year.
IEEE continually strives to support the community of authors and readers globally and works to provide authors with a wide range of options and choices to publish in whether it be a traditional journal or in a fully open access journal. With an expanding portfolio of options, IEEE continues to support open science and provide more options and choices to support the work and needs of all authors and researchers. IEEE is also committed to working with institutions and funders to provide sustainable open access publishing opportunities to authors that allow for a wider dissemination of knowledge and enable authors to maximize exposure of their research. With these programs in place, IEEE has reached a major milestone this year of over 100,000 open access articles published in IEEE Xplore.
As a supporter of open science, IEEE joins in the celebration of International Open Access Week from Monday, October 23rd through Sunday, October 29th. Below you will find important information that will be highlighted throughout the week.
IEEE’s Growing Open Access Program
IEEE strives to support all authors and readers globally by offering a variety of publications that are compliant with their circumstances and needs, regardless of their funding status, the publishing mandates they may have in place, or where in the world they may work.
IEEE offers many options and opportunities for open access publishing, all designed to meet the varying needs of authors throughout their careers:
- IEEE Access–A highly-cited multidisciplinary fully open access journal that has published over 70,000 articles to date.
- Fully Open Access Topical Journals–A fast-growing collection in a wide range of technologies–over 30 titles in all.
- Hybrid Journals–Over 170 top-cited journals and magazines spanning an array of technology fields, all offering open access options, and now qualify as Transformative Journals under Plan S.

IEEE has Over 450 Institutional Open Access Agreements
Did you know that over 450 institutions now have open access agreements with IEEE? IEEE offers open access programs designed to make it convenient for institutions and funders to support and manage costs for authors, and simplify the publishing process by paying for article processing charges (APCs) in advance.
IEEE has flexible options for any size organization designed to make it easy for institutions to assist their authors and demonstrate their support for open access.

How to Publish Open Access with IEEE Webinar Series
IEEE has hosted several webinars covering how to publish open access with IEEE for many different regions all over the world. Below you will find our latest webinar developed for Europe and the Middle East.
This recently recorded on-demand webinar provides authors with best practices in preparing a manuscript, navigating the journal submission process, and important tips to help an author get published. It also reviews the opportunities authors and academic institutions have to enhance the visibility and impact of their research by publishing in the many open access options available from IEEE.
This session will feature the perspective of Sergio Benedetto of Politecnico di Torino, Italy who currently serves as Emeritus Professor and current IEEE Vice President of Publication Services and Products. Given his vast editorial experience, Sergio Benedetto will provide critical insights on IEEE’s peer review and submission processes and tips on what editors look for in submissions. In addition, presenters from IEEE will be on hand to cover topics such as IEEE open access programs for institutions, research strategies using IEEE Xplore, author tools from IEEE, and other important resources for authors.

Open Science Solutions
IEEE is continually working to develop more tools, services, and publication opportunities for authors and researchers to help increase the exposure of their work. To that end, IEEE has also introduced the following open science initiatives to further support researchers and enable greater discoverability of their research.
Code Ocean is an easy-to-use web platform in which users can share and run code in the cloud. Users are able to easily upload their code and associated data to the site, where other users are able to run them and/or modify them.
Research data sharing is critical to scientific innovation and reproducible research. IEEE DataPort is an accessible online platform that enables researchers to easily share, access, and manage datasets in one trusted location. The platform accepts all types of datasets, up to 2TB. Standard dataset uploads are free of charge.
TechRxiv is a free preprint server for unpublished research in electrical engineering, computer science, and related technology. TechRxiv provides researchers across a broad range of fields the opportunity to share early results of their work ahead of formal peer review and publication. This free repository aims to increase the accessibility of scientific findings, enhance collaboration among researchers, improve research, and build the future of scholarly communication. Authors can post preprint papers to TechRxiv regardless of where they eventually intend to submit and publish the paper.
